Jonesy, volume one

Review: Jonesy is the story of how our title character figured out her powers and all the troubles that she gets into because of them. She's watching anime and her two favourite characters are having a fight. Jonesy yells at the television for them to kiss instead...and they do! She figures out her abilities just before Valentine's Day, which, according to her, has always sucked. However, things are made more interesting this year when this restless Cupid gets involved!

The art in this is over-the-top levels of fun - bright clashy colours, hair that may as well have its own personality, and fantastically expressive character design. Likewise, the story is a series of exclamation points that really give a definitive voice to Jonesy, her friends, and her family. This is a lemon-drop sugar rush of a comic - Jonesy is a sarcastic, brash, mouthy teenager who is gifted with the ability to make people fall in love! The sour and the sweet really play well in this story - every time Jonesy's massive personality seems like it's going to take over, her superpower interrupts and shows us all how well-meaning she really is. Jonesy just wants people to be happy, and if she can do that as well as get Stuff to fall in love with her, then everything will be perfect!

Recommended for: Kids and tweens will love this one - it's bright with stacks of attitude and plenty to identify with. For older comic fans, this book is candy-fluff of the best kind.
